What a year it’s been! Covid 19, Brexit, illness and death, plans interrupted, lockdowns, isolation. Misery abounds.
This Christmas I propose to bring you 12 little glad tidings of things that have brought a little joy to life this dismal year.
Today: catching up on Netflix
Netflix
Not having been much of a TV person at home – I was usually doing something else – I’ve often felt left out of discussions about TV series. Netflix has helped me catch up with what people have been saying for years as well as keeping me entertained through loooong days of semi lockdown. Thank you Netflix.
We caught up with Breaking Bad and Peaky Blinders but Spiral/Engrenages still eludes me, region blocked as it is here. I’ve tried downloading it at home but it can’t be played here. I’ve tried buying a DVD but we don’t have a DVD player here. I’ve tried bringing the DVD player from home, but it won’t work here. Maybe one day I’ll get to see what the fuss is about.
I binge-watched all ten series of Modern Family in the spring, which I enjoyed immensely. I think I’m generally overthinking, neurotic Mitchell but with a smattering of Gloria and Phil. J is Claire.
I liked the later episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale much more than The Testaments. Better Call Saul enthralled me more than Breaking Bad, though I sometimes found it difficult to remember the stories. Everyone I know raved about Fleabag but it left me cold. Sorry. Yes, I binge-watched The Crown. I like the frocks and the history even though some of it was a bit dodgy.
At the moment we’re in the middle of The Queen’s Gambit. Everyone assures me that this is brilliant but it hasn’t quite gelled with me yet. I am however, thoroughly enjoying Call My Agent (Dix Pour Cent) as I was assured I would. I became a bit disgruntled with the English subtitles so I changed to French ones but even they don’t capture the subtleties of the writing. I’ve found that my French has got less rusty as time goes on and I’m even learning new words. We’re more or less half way through this, and I’m already dreading coming to the end of the episodes. Maybe I’ll just have to start on the tbr book pile next.
If you have Amazon Prime, “This Is Us” is utterly brilliant.
I tried to get that but I can’t watch it here.
