What a year it’s been! Covid 19, Brexit, illness and death, plans interrupted, lockdowns, isolation. Misery abounds.
This Christmas I propose to bring you 12 little glad tidings of things that have brought a little joy to life this dismal year.
Today: Kuglof
Kuglof
Having done the Noom lifestyle rebalance in 2019, I have more or less weaned myself off my addiction to chocolate, though just sometimes I have to sate the craving with a little square of 70% or a fondant, but I still love all things doughy. What does that say about my need for comfort food?
This year a new French-style bakery, Levain, opened in the new bit of the newly-built DB Plaza, and has predictably become a favourite for post-prandial coffee and a bit of sweet.
They sell lots of innovative breads there. Our most recent new taste was molasses, rose, lychee and walnut sourdough, which goes excellently with a bit of gooey Reblochon.
Get on with it, Gita. Kuglof is like a little more solid, less rich panettone that includes almonds and sultanas and tastes like a sugar-coated doughnut on the outside. (The one on the picture is not as big as it looks.) It’s deliciously comforting as a treat but I should really be nothing but grateful that they bakery only makes it at the weekend, shouldn’t I?
