It doesn’t look or feel like we are half way there, but apparently we are.
Our building work is normally boarded up for security reasons which means that we are unable to see what work is going on. I think it is normal for clients at this stage of work to wonder whether there is, in fact, any work going on at all.
It was, perhaps, for this reason that the builders took down the boarding behind what used to be the door from our hall to our sitting room today. Could it be that they sensed the tension of expectation in the air? Could today have marked the point at which, finally, there will be no more demolition only construction and therefore no invading, encroaching dust? I can’t give an definitive answer until our next site meeting on Thursday.
However, our door now leads somewhere again and, like Alice in her Wonderland I waited until the builders’ departure this afternoon to reach tentatively for the door handle. This is what awaited me:
A view from one corner or the new build. That new wall is the extent of the kitchen. To the left is the existing door to the hall, with a Wine Society box on the floor. Priorities. You can see the mighty steels that had to be moved into place by the whole gang. The small walls on the floor are there to support all of the underfloor heating and the eventual slate floor.
This is my sitting room. I have always loved that window in the corner, a work of conceptual art in itself and there should be a matching one on the other side soon. We’re just negotiating a new fireplace to replace the old one, made of moulded reconstituted stone.
I’m particularly pleased with this photo, from the other end of the new build. On the left are the boards which will be replaced in due course by bifold doors. Directly in front of you is the space that will also be filled by bifolds with internal blinds as a moveable partition. I’m really pleased at how much light is coming into the large room from that roof light, which will eventually have electric blinds on it. I think they are already my favourite thing in the new extension. In the far right hand corner you can see the opening to the future pantry.
Ugh. When will it be finished, though?

Oh wow – it is really coming along!
Do you really think so?
Also, Lesley, if you look in the first photo through the glass door you can see my panier that I take to the shops. It’s all a bit Audrey Hepburn. In my mind, at least.
I’m as impatient as you are entitled to be. Can’t wait to see the finished project.
*fidgets*
Oh but it will be marvellous ….it will suddenly emerge like a pheonix from the flames….or, in this case….rubble.
